Sleep Studies & Diagnostic Testing

Home Sleep Studies

Professional sleep monitoring in the comfort of your own bed.

A home-based sleep study allows us to monitor your sleep patterns in a familiar environment while still gathering high-quality clinical data. This study is an effective alternative to a laboratory setting, especially for patients where travel is difficult or a clinic stay is not desirable. We use these studies to identify disruptions in your sleep cycles and determine if a sleep disorder is affecting your health.

What the Study Measures:

  • Sleep Patterns: An EEG monitors your REM and NREM cycles to identify sleep disruptions.

  • Respiratory Health: Sensors track your breathing rates, oxygen levels (no needles required), and snoring.

  • Physical Activity: We monitor heart rate, leg movements, and general body movements throughout the night.

  • Wakefulness: The study records how many times you awaken, providing a clear picture of your total rest quality.

The Process

Preparation

You will visit our practice to be fitted with electrodes on your jaw and chest before returning home to sleep as normal.

The Study

You simply sleep in your own bed while the portable monitors record your data.

Follow Up

You return to the clinic the following morning for electrode removal; our specialists then analyse the results and contact you with a report and next steps.

Laboratory Sleep Studies

Highly detailed sleep analysis under expert clinical supervision.

Laboratory sleep studies are performed in our specialised facility and offer the most comprehensive level of sleep monitoring available. While very similar to a home study in terms of the electrodes used, a laboratory study includes the presence of a sleep specialist to ensure the highest level of data accuracy and patient support throughout the night.

Key Features:

  • Clinical Supervision: Continuous monitoring by a sleep specialist to ensure all sensors remain correctly placed.

  • In-Depth Data: Laboratory settings often allow for more advanced equipment to be used, providing a deeper look at complex sleep issues.

  • Diagnostic Precision: Ideal for patients with more complex medical histories or those requiring a more controlled environment for their assessment.

Pulmonary Lung Function Testing (LFT)

Assessing your respiratory health and lung capacity.

More recently, Medisleep has expanded its services to offer Pulmonary Lung Function Testing (LFT). These tests are non-invasive and are designed to measure how well your lungs are working, including how much air they can hold and how quickly you can move air in and out. This is a vital diagnostic tool for patients experiencing shortness of breath or chronic coughing.

Testing Includes:

  • Spirometry: Measuring the volume and speed of your breath.

  • Volume Testing: Assessing the total capacity of your lungs to hold oxygen.

  • Bulk-Billed Care: Like our sleep studies, LFT is bulk-billed for eligible patients with a GP referral.

24-Hour Heart Holter Monitor

Continuous cardiac monitoring to track your heart’s rhythm.

To provide a more holistic view of your health, we offer 24-hour Heart Holter monitoring. This involves wearing a small, portable device that records your heart’s electrical activity continuously for a full day. It is a painless way for our clinicians to identify irregular heartbeats (arrhythmias) that may not be caught during a standard, short-term ECG.

Why Monitor the Heart?

  • Comprehensive Data: Captures heart activity during your normal daily routine and while you sleep.

  • Symptom Identification: Helps correlate symptoms like palpitations or dizziness with your heart’s actual rhythm.

  • Integrated Care: This service is bulk-billed and provides essential data that can be reviewed alongside your sleep or respiratory results.
